The benefits of a workplace skin check

There is sufficient evidence to prove that outdoor workers are at high risk of developing skin cancer.

Skin Patrols own data on over 20,000 patients is supported by research from both Victorian and Queensland government studies into occupational UV exposure.

Our data shows an incidence of skin cancer among outdoor workers more than double the national average.

Take the test below and see how good you are at picking skin cancer. How well would your employees do? A Patrol Clinic not only detects skin cancer early it educates your workers on how to regularly self check and what to look for.

Skin Patrol and other research has shown

  1. An incidence of melanoma in outdoor workers more than double the national average
  2. 94.7% of outdoor workers exceeding recommended daily UV exposure with over 40% receiving up to 5 times the recommended daily limit
  3. Less than 10% of outdoor workers are regularly appropriately protected with sunsafe clothing, wide brimmed hats and sunglasses
  4. Less than 20% of outdoor workers have an annual skin check with a doctor
  5. Many outdoor workers, whilst aware of their risk, feel it's too late for prevention and early detection
  6. One in five outdoor workers require medical treatment for skin damage

In order for many people to adopt Sunsafe behaviour they must perceive that skin cancer is both relevant to them and preventable. Skin Patrol has developed a comprehensive communication mix that achieves this and also educates individuals on the importance of regular self examination.

A skin check isn't just a tool to detect skin cancer in its early stage it provides the perfect forum to help individuals understand their own risk factors. Once they have identified they have sun damage they are more likely to listen to messages on prevention and early detection.

A Skin Patrol full body skin check combined with our comprehensive education and training program offers a two-fold fight against skin cancer. Our aim is to arm each patient and their family, with the desire and knowledge to regularly self check for skin cancer.

  Skin Patrols Experience & Reach

Skin Patrol is Australia's most experienced and far reaching mobile medical practice. We are the only provider in the world capable of offering dermatologist diagnosis to all patients, regardless of their location through our skin check program.

Skin Patrol works with all industries from mining to finance, federal & state government agencies and private business. We have provided mobile medical clinics at sites ranging from breweries to mining operations, railway yards to the corporate head offices of multinational companies.

Our clinics may be conducted at a small business requiring just one day at one location, or a large multi-national that has 5000 employees, which requires 100+ days at 30 site locations across three states.

No other mobile medical practice has the ability to execute and deliver specialised programs services to thousands of patients across numerous sites and no other provider can demonstrate the same proven ability to create long lasting behavioural change to positively impact patient

  Why offer skin checks?

Our research indicates it is likely that 20-25% of patients occupationally exposed to UV require some form of treatment for skin cancer or sun damage.

Over 75% of patients who attend our clinics believe they are at high risk of skin cancer, have a spot of concern or are concerned in general about skin cancer yet over 80% do not have an annual skin check or know how to properly self check.

A Skin Patrol onsite program provides a trustworthy and accessible clinic in a familiar setting. They make patients feel welcome, comfortable and provide an experience that goes beyond any medical appointment they have had. We encourage questions and see each appointment as an opportunity to deliver a personalised, relevant health message, which will promote behavioural change at work and home.

Flexible appointment times and an approachable onsite team result in outstanding participation rates and it also provides an opportunity for employees to confidentially address any medical concerns they may have.

Helping patients understand the benefits of early detection and getting them to take personal responsibility for better prevention will help your organisation reduce litigation risks and improve corporate wide adoption of your sun safe policies.

The benefits of a Skin Patrol program to your organisation include:

1. Long lasting behavioural change at work and home to reduce specific health risks

  Education & Training

A recent report by the Australian Department of Health & Ageing1 concludes that "an early detection program would need to change perceptions of personal relevance and educate people in the skills that they would need to check their own skin".  Furthermore, it states that "any detection campaign would need to focus on seeing a health professional regularly."

This is what Skin Patrol does.

Skin Patrol changes individuals sun-safety habits at work and during leisure time.

While facts and figures are important, they are not enough and the Skin Patrol program combines general skin cancer and sun-safety education with facts relating specifically to individuals lifestyle, skin type and their own risk factor.

This results in "ownership of change".

One-on-one education is the critical medium in the communication mix when it comes to skin cancer education. It provides a confidential environment for questions that one may not ask in a group situation and demonstrates personal relevance.

Many employees have misconceptions about the sun and skin cancer that need to be addressed before they can practice sun-safety.

Some misconceptions include:

Its too late to worry about prevention, the damage is already done FALSE

I am too olive/dark to get skin cancer     FALSE

Only burning is a problem    FALSE

A tan protects against skin cancer    FALSE

A 30+ sunscreen is adequate for a days work in the sun     FALSE

You need a long amount of sun exposure to avoid Vitamin D deficiency    FALSE

(The overwhelming majority of Australians get enough incidental sun - even in the depths of winter)

Only need to put sunscreen on when hot and sunny    FALSE

Only older people need to look for skin cancer     FALSE
